The role and ethos of Óglaigh na hÉireann is to defend, protect and support the people of Ireland.
The Defence Forces has a proud tradition of participating in United Nations peace keeping missions since 1958 when it first deployed to Lebanon with the UN Emergency Force in Lebanon. Currently the Defence Forces has deployed approximately 450 personnel serving in 17 missions in 15 countries. All of which would not have been possible without a rigorous training regime built on fitness and self motivation.
The Defence Forces has demonstrated its fundamental role in protecting the citizens and resources of the state through core military skills that cannot be replicated elsewhere in the public or private sector.
During the process of Operation Transformation the Defence Forces will be encouraging the Leaders to adhere to the values of the organisation; namely respect, loyalty, selflessness, physical courage, moral courage and integrity.
